USB Flash Drive

Email this topic | Download this topic

Remember when the 1 gigabyte hard drive came out for the PC? Now we have 64 gigabytes packed into a few inches with the USB Flash Drive. The memory capacity runs anywhere from 128 megabytes up to 64 gigabytes. These little memory gadgets have changed the way a lot of folks work and play.

   Shhhhhhhh

i've broken two in four months. the covers tend to come off as i'm a little clumsy and then won't go back on properly.

   Do not require special software

The target machine sees the device as another hard drive so you can insert it into a USB port and use it right away.
   No write-protection ability

On the older floppies there was a little notch you could move back and forth to write-protect it. Not so with the flash drive - it will write over anything you ask it to.

   Portable

The size makes it easily fit into a pocket or a purse.
Limited number of uses before failure

They wear out just like anything else. Keep a backup handy.

   Hold any kind of media

It can hold .pdfs, word processing documents, spreadsheet files, entire applications, anti-virus software, video, and configurations.
Will not work in some laptops

Even though flash drives pretty much all work the same, they do not all look the same. Some manufacturers create flash drives that have a lot of plastic on them that causes the drive to not be able to insert into a laptop.

   Dust and scratches no problem

Dust and scratches are still an issue for CD ROM and floppy disc media but because all of the memory exists inside of a hard plastic shell on the USB key, dust and scratches are not an issue.
   Easy to steal

If you left it lying around someplace, it's as easy as a quarter or a pen to pickup.

Powered by computer or other device

This drive does not require a power source of its own; it borrows what it needs from the computer.
   Easy to lose

It was hard to lose a big 5 and a quarter floppy disc. They were so big you had to have a special container just for them. Not so with the USB drive, it's about the size of a lipstick container.
