Home school or Homeschooling

The National Home Education Research Institute, http://www.nheri.org/, estimates that homeschooling is growing about 7% each year. Based on a citation on the NHERI site, the U.S. Department of Education estimates that approximately 1.1 million kids were homeschooled in 2004. NEHI says it's closer to 1.7 to 2.1 million. Homeschooling is protected in a lot of states under protection of religious rights and originally the majority of homeschoolers were Christians; that is not the case today. Crime in schools, drugs, and the continual slide in academic requirements have prompted parents across the country to bring their kids home to school. When our daughter was in the 2nd grade a boy in her class threatened her life repeatedly and physically attacked her twice. He was never removed or suspended. We were so flabbergasted at the school's response to the situation and our child was so traumatized we decided to bring her home to school for a trial period - that was five years ago. This year I am happy to say that she skipped the eighth grade and will receive a regionally accredited High School diploma from the University of Indiana within the next five years. Regardless, it hasn't been all roses - like anything else, there are pros and cons.

| PROs |
What's your rating |
| Plenty of free support groups available |
| Homeschoolers all over the county have built up networks of families that homeschool. New homeschoolers can get assistance through these support groups for help with state rules and getting started. |
| Huge market of curricula available to homeschoolers |
| There is so much curricula, materials, and study aids for homeschoolers that it is almost a problem. There's too much to look through and it can be overwhelming for a new homeschooling parent. Some of the more well-known vendors are Rainbow Resources, http://www.rainbowresource.com/, Abekka, and Usborne. |
| Child able to focus on school & not stressed about social issues |
| Can't stress this one enough. If kids have someone that is threatening to kill them or they have so much pressure to fit in, it's hard to concentrate on school work. |
| Ability to adjust schoolwork to child's learning rate |
| If the child is slower in math and is a whiz at grammar or writing, the parent can keep the math slow and speed up the grammar. This cannot be done in school because the teachers have objectives the entire class must meet - the class usually moves at the speed of the slowest student. |
| Don't have ongoing behavior problems |
| Since you and your child/children are together for the majority of the week, problems or issues that kids are facing are attended to right away. The child-parent connection is strong and there is a mutual respect. |
